In 2014-15 tour season, about 4.8 million local holiday makers visit ordinary scheduled destinations and new destinations, short and long trips are popular, per source of Myanmar Pilgrimage and Tour Services Association. Currently, UNESCO listed ancient Pyu cities, Sri Kestra, Hanlin and Baikthano are mostly visited by historical researchers and the rest tours are combined with new and old schedules, said U Than Htay, Chairman of the Association. “The present tour schedules are added with newly emerged destinations. For example, Mandalay, Monywa, Sagging trips are added to visit newly built Jade Pagoda near Mandalay. Other new schedules are for old Pyu cities,” he said. In rainy season, Bagan and Upper Myanmar tour schedules are visited less and open season, tour ticket prices are sold as usual, he continued. During coming open season, old tour schedules adding new ones are interested by local travellers. Short day trip is holiday maker’s choice. Tickets for Shwe Taungpyone trip are sold with Mandalay-Sagaing-Monywa tour schedule or Mandalay-Pyin Oo Lwin. According to the Association, in 2013-14 open season, the number of local pilgrims was 3.6 million.
