The discussion between ICIMOD and the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism (MOHT) held on May 2014 to lay down the strategy and policy for the development of ecotourism industry in Myanmar, announced by the Ministry.
Among many types of tourism industry, the ecotourism – ecologically based tourism-is popular for travelers and established in 1998.
In 2013, there were over 2 million foreign visitors to Myanmar, and now expecting the numbers to increase more than previous year. So the ecotourism is strengthen for development in tourism industry.
The ecotourism in Myanmar was established in 1998. The Ministry of Forestry has formed the ecological based tourism enterprise comprising 15 places of natural parks, sanctuaries and zoological gardens since 2011, and 25 places be extended.
The 20 places are in following States and Regions:
Kachin State: Hkakabo Razi national park, Phonkan Razi sanctuary, HukaungValley sanctuary, Inndawgyi sanctuary
Chin State: Nat-ma taung; Sagging region: A-laungdaw Kathapa sanctuary,Chat-thinn statuary; Tanintharyi region: Annawa national park in Lanpi Island; Bago region:
Moeyongyi Lake sanctuary; Magwe region: Shwesettaw sanctuary, Watthaekan sanctuary; Mandalay region:Mt. Popa sanctuary, Lawkananda sanctuary; Mon State:
Kyaikhteeyoe sanctuary; Yangon region: Hlawgar
natural park, Shan State: Innlay Lake sanctuary,Pinlaung & Pyadalinn sanctuaries; Ayeyarwady region:Main-mahla-kyun sanctuary; Tha-mee-hla-kyun sanctuary;
Under Myanma Timber Enterprise: Myaing-hay-won and Pho-kyar Elephat Camps
